The 2 miles (3.2 km) Las Pailas trail cuts through tropical dry and rain forests with stops at various secondary volcanic activities.
The hike starts right after the entrance office where the trail starts at an open area with few trees. This trail consists of volcanic activity while you learn the legend of the volcano, different species of plants, trees and volcanic activity such as:
- Volcanic Bubbling Mud
- Inactive volcanic lakes
- Small craters
- Volcanic Fumes
Around this trail surrounded by forest and dense vegetation, you might have the opportunity to spot wildlife during the hike. Keep in mind that wildlife is unpredictable and we can never guarantee to see wildlife.

oROPENDOLA wATERFALL
Get ready for a refreshing dip in the La Oropendola Waterfall. This is a small walk of half a mile each way (1km) that you do on your own along a path of varied terrain that leads to the river. You also walk a small distance inside the river until you reach the waterfall. La Oropendola waterfall, with its impressive 25 meters, falls into a bubbling turquoise pool in the exuberant canyon of the Blanco River, creating an incredible tropical oasis.

You will enjoy a delicious typical buffet lunch at La Hacienda Restaurant.
Hot Springs and Mud Bath
Enjoy the soothing hot springs and mud baths at Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, where the thermal waters have been valued for centuries. Located by the Rio Negro and warmed by Costa Rica’s largest and most active volcano, these hot springs are a beautiful and peaceful retreat.
Surrounded by a lush forest, you’ll find ten mineral-rich pools along the riverbank, with access via suspension bridges. Try a volcanic mud treatment and rinse off in the cold river before relaxing in the hot springs.
There are dressing rooms, bathrooms, and lockers at the entrance. From there, a short 10-minute walk through the woods takes you to the springs.

- The tour begins at Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja – Sector Las Pailas. A reservation is required in advance for this tour.

- A 4-wheel drive vehicle is not required to get here.
- Free parking is available on-site.
- The parking lot is monitored during all operating hours, so you can securely leave your belongings and luggage in your car if needed.
- Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your tour guide for the day.
- You will then proceed to reception to get checked in for your tour.
