“Had the most amazing tour today with guide Vladimir Sanchez. He knew so much about the forests, trees and wildlife. We saw so many animals including Keel-billed toucan, Great currasow, Agoutis, and Howler, White-faced Capuchin and Squirrel Monkeys. He spoke perfect English, compensating for our lack of Spanish. A knowledgable guide adds so much value to your visit.”

Trail Start & First Volcanic Areas
Begin your hike by following the forest trail marked with green pillars until you reach the beginning of the loop.
If you visit early in the morning, we recommend starting on the right side of the loop trail, which takes you through the open and sunny terrain first.
You’ll soon reach the first geothermal area, Las Hornillas. Here, you can smell sulfur in the air and see steam rising from cracks in the ground.
Bubbling Mud Pots & Volcanic Lagoon
Continue through the open terrain, where you can catch glimpses of Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, before reaching some of the most fascinating volcanic features.
The first is a volcanic lagoon, a highly acidic pond that can change color depending on the minerals in the water.
Afterwards, you’ll get to one of the highlights of Las Pailas: the bubbling mud pots, where underground heat causes the clay and mud to move and form bubbles.
Scenery & Wildlife Along the Way
Follow the path through tropical dry forest, passing unique vegetation along the way.
Always keep an eye out for wildlife! Even in this drier area, you may spot large iguanas, tropical birds and other local animals.
As you continue, you’ll notice the landscape change from tropical dry forest to humid forest, with the vegetation becoming denser and greener.
This transition lets you experience the fascinating biodiversity and different microclimates of Costa Rica along a relatively short hike.
Humid Forest & Hidden Volcanic Features
Step into the humid forest and walk beneath huge trees with unusual shapes. Keep an eye on the treetops, as you may spot monkeys or toucans.
After a while, you’ll notice steam floating through the forest, a sign that you’re getting close to the next volcanic areas.
Reach the Volcancito (Little Volcano), a large steam vent, followed by a boiling natural pool known as a fumarole.
Seasonal Waterfall & End of the Trail
After observing the last volcanic features, continue along the trail and walk up a few steps to reach the seasonal waterfall. Depending on the time of year, it can look very different.
During the rainy season, especially in September and October, the waterfall is usually at its best, while from November to August it may be much smaller.
The final section of the trail takes you back through the forest, crossing small rivers and passing beneath tropical trees before returning to the park entrance.
